She graduated in 1956 from the original high school in Westchester, Los Angeles, California. The same year that she arrived in the United Kingdom, she became the first solo folk performer signed to a major British record label, when she got a recording contract with Decca Records.[2] By 1965, she was a headlining performer, referred to in The Times as 'Britain's First Lady of Folk'. By the end of that year, she had filled the Royal Albert Hall for one of her concerts.
