From the Headoffice
Hello everybody,

The important news is that RAINBOW WILL PLAY HOLLAND AGAIN. You can read all about it in this issue. We also will report extensively about the Rockpop-festival in Dortmund last May where Rainbow didn't play. Many people travelled to Germany, this joke have cost them a lot of money. So they have the right to get an explanation for that.

Also in the issue we will pay attention to the most plausibly rumour of all time: the departure of Bobby Rondinelli, which wasn't true at all. A new feature is the "LYRICS" section. From now on we'll print in every issue lyrics of a Rainbow song, we'll start with "A light in the black". See you on 16 November in Rotterdam.

WIM BOSMAN PROUDLY PRESENTS:
LIVE IN NEDERLAND ON 16th NOVEMBER
RAINBOW

Yes indeed, the boys are on their way. Again Wim Bosman will organize this event. He did it very well the last few years, so we're sure it'll be excellent as well this time. For the third time in a row the concert will take place in the Rotterdam AHOY-hall. It's the only show in Holland this European tour.

RECORD TALK

BERNIE TORME "TURN OUT THE LIGHTS"
Kamaflage Records KAM LP 2

Like the cataloguenumber shows, is ex-Gillan guitarist Torme's first solo-album only the second release of this label (the first was the debut LP of TANK). It's difficult to buy this album, even through the import-shops and if you find it the price will be high. I liked Bernie very much when he was in Gillan and had high expectation of this album. I know some of his work before he was in Gillan and I knew he then also did the vocals. He does that now again.

On this record he's got Phil Spalding on bass and Saxon-drummer (not yet when this album was recorded) Nigel Glockler. Gillan-keyboardsman Colin Towns helps out on some tracks on keyboards and flute.

After listening to this record several times there's only one conclusion: HOPELESS!!! The level Bernie shows here is very disappointing. The compositions are without fantasy, his guitar playing is not as good as the things he did in Gillan and most of all: Bernie just can't sing. It's a bit the same story as with ex-Scorpions man Uli Roth. They both can't sing! "Turn out the lights", "America" and "India" are fair songs but the rest is all very poor. It's time he start lookin' for a good singer for his band.

JON LORD "BEFORE I FORGET"
EMI Harvest SHSP 4123

For the fist time since "Sarabande" again a solo-album of Jon Lord and this is not a continuation of that last album. On the contrary, this is precisely what I didn't expected. A nice record, like a good snack, compositional far below his level tho. It's a pop-album, that's not standing out. Jon most likely wanted to do it this way. He invited an impressive list of friends. People we saw on the records of Cozy Powell & Bernie Marsden lately plus Bad Company minus Paul Rodgers. The result is in my ears a lot less than the albums of Bernie and Cozy. I won't listen a lot to this "Before I'll forget", it's just too weak. Jon doesn't write a lot in Whitesnake these days, it looks like his compositional activities are over.

R.B. & GUESTS "GREEN BULLFROG"

We often have got questions about this album. Because of lack of room we haven't reviewed this album so far, but now it's about time since it turned up again in many import-recordshops. There are quite some sensational stories about this album. He was supposed to be an album by the group BABY FACE, of which were told wild stories around in 1972, but that's not right. It's also not an unreleased Deep Purple LP.

Even now this record is for sale in many import-shops it still has something mysterious. According to the cover this album is recorded by a group of heavy friends one night in London in 1971. the album was in 1972 released in the States on the MCA-label. But the names of the musicians were never used to promote the album. This record became soon in the oblivion, people who did buy the album, described it as a 'killer rock guitar album'.

Till 1978 the question remained who was playing on this album. In an interview with Steve Rose of the American GUITAR PLAYER magazine (September 1978) Ritchie Blackmore revealed five of the nine names. He mentioned Roger Glover, Ian Paice, guitarplayers Jim Sullivan and Albert Lee and himself. Also the style of Jon Lord is noticeable, so that leaves three names open.

Blackmore, Lee and Sullivan knew each other and each guitar techniques. Sullivan is a man, who know Ritchie since the fifties. Jim started his career in the group of Marty Wilde (yes, the father of Kim), the Wild Cats (in 1959). Lee started his career as replacement (for the then unknown) Jimmy Page in 1962 with Neil Christian's Crusaders. Also Ritchie played (through the years) with Christian.

The music on the LP is record in one take without overdubs in De Lane Lea Studio (now the Kingsway, the studio of Gillan) and the producer was Derek Lawrence, an old friend of Blackmore and producer of the first few Purple-albums, assisted by technician (at that time) Martin Birch. "Green Bullfrog" is uncomplicated blues-rock, everyone can improvise as much as they want. Every track has a swinging guitarsolo. All the songs are old blues-standards, like "My baby left me", "Lawdy Miss Clawdy" and "Walk a while in my shoes". That last one has a very good solo by Ritchie.

The long instrumental "Bullfrog" is a great jam, everyone does a solo when it's his turn. The solos of Jon Lord and Ritchie are marvellous. We hear a repeating theme, that obvious is from the hand of Ritchie. I only can recommend "Green Bullfrog". The album is in the States released on the ECY-label, cataloguenumber ECY 16. The address is: ECY Street Records, Box 101 College point, N.Y. 11356. The original cover has a big green bullfrog with a guitar and a purple background.

DEEP PURPLE "COLLECTION"

Belgian compilation LP. Tricky cover. Live photo of Coverdale-Blackmore-Lord-Paice-Hughes. Music from the first 3 albums. Low budget price. Not any rare material. But a deceitful cover!

Released on Sounds Superb. Catalogue number: 4MO36-64660. Not worth the effort.

TAPE TALK

As we get many questions about audio concert tapes, we now start a new section named "Tape Talk" with reviews of these collector items.

RAINBOW - GOTHENBURG 1980
Line-up: Blackmore-Glover-Powell-Bonnet-Airey
Recorded: 17 January 1980 in Gothenburg Scandinavium (Sweden)

This was the first European concert of this line-up. The concert comes on two C 90 audio tapes. Tape 1 opens with an interesting view on the soundcheck. This aspect will be new for many people. How do they test the sound of a venue. Well, here you can here it. the first six-and-a-half minute we hear Powell, sometimes accompanied by music of Tchaikovsky. Glover joins in. Then it's Airey who's testing some of his gear, while Glover is playing his bass. Then it takes Ritchie about four minutes for his guitar.

After the tape has played twelve minutes, Ritchie starts "Catch the rainbow", followed by the others, Bonnet is to join in after three minutes. The songs takes about eleven minutes. Then there's a classical intro before we get "Since you been gone". Mr. B plays the chords schedule of "Streets of London" but ends it when Glover starts playing through it.

Obvious Ritchie is not satisfied about "Catch the rainbow" (they didn't play that for a long time) and starts it all over again, after Bonnet first have to sing a few lines of it on his own. After four minutes they stop, they confer about it and then continue the song. On the B side of this tape we first get some guitar exercises of RB, then Don test his sequencer for his solo in "Lost in Hollywood".

After 15 minutes the soundcheck is over and we can start with the concert itself, that's very much the same as the one they did in Rotterdam on 2 February 1980: "Eyes of the world" (7;25), "Love's no friend" (8;15), the classical intro by Don and Ritchie followed by "Since you been gone" (Bonnet don't know the lyircs on a certain point) plus "Somewhere over the rainbow" (played as one piece: 5;50) and then a 6 minutes version of "All night long", that ends because the tape runs out.

On tape 2 "All night long" continues for another two minutes (Bonnet shouts in a moment of desperation "Jesus"). Then we get "Catch the Rainbow" (almost 14 minutes) and the full execution of "Lost In Hollywood" (over 28 minutes), with all the solos, and the Beethoven-part but in a slow version this time. On the last side of the tape we hear the encores. Ritchie improvise first for two minutes, then slowly starts the "Lazy" theme, keeps improvising to return (now full tempo) to "Lazy".

The next seven-and-a-half minute it's "Man on the silver mountain" and followed by "Blues". Then it's "Will you love me tomorrow" (2;10), "Long live rock and roll" (2;15), "Kill the king" plus a guitar demolishing (3;30) and a short reprise of "Long live" (1;15). There are encores for a total of about 20 minutes. The traditional closing, Judy Garland's "Somewehere over the rainbow", we hear in full. Total length of this concert is 1 hour and 33 minutes. The soundquality of this tape is very good and it becomes really interesting for fans because of the Rainbow soundcheck.

RAINBOW - DETROIT 1975
Line-up: Blackmore-Dio-Powell-Bain-Carey
Recorded: 20 November 75 Detroit Auditorium (USA)

In November 75 Rainbow did their first concert ever during a short US tour in November, there are a couple of tapes going around and this is the one with the best quality. This Detroit show is the third or fourth concert they did. So this is the very beginning of the band and very interesting to see how it all started. The concert does NOT open with a tape, it's Blackmore who improvise a minute before he starts "Do you close your eyes", it's a very good five-and-a-half minute version.

Then we get "Self portrait" (four minutes) with an extra guitarsolo. Very unique, they haven't played this song after this short tour anymore live. Next is "16th Century Greensleeves" in a good version (8 minutes). Dio talks to the audience (we hear people begging vaguely for a Purple-song), he introduce "Man on the silver mountain", but we first get "Catch the rainbow", played without a restpoint. At the end the sound is gone, probably because the recording tape ended. We're just in time back to hear the end of the song.

"Man on the silver mountain" (9½ minute) without "Blues" or "Starstruck", but with another instrumental midpiece. After 40 minutes Tony starts his intro for "Stargazer", but is interrupted because the tape runs out.

On side 2 we hear the end of the solo, before they start the actual song. We get a ten minute version including a great 4 minutes solo of RB. Without a rest they continue with an eleven minute version of "A light in the black". Just like "Self portrait" very unique, because this track was also crossed out after this tour. Again great solos by both RB and Tony Carey.

After the solos Ronnie returns to late on stage. The show ends with 20 minutes of "Still I'm sad", and again very good soloing. The Beethoven-fragment wasn't part of the show then, but Cozy's solo was already with the Tchaikovsky-tape. The soundquality of this tape is not as good as the one of Gothenburg, but it's still worth it all because of the unique live performances of "Self portrait" and "A light in the black". Besides this is Rainbow in their early days, like we never got to hear in Europe.

NEEDLESS COMMOTION FOR THE FANS

BOBBY IS NOT GONE !

Rumours are very rarely true, most of the time they are fairy tales. The case of Bob Rondinelli is something else. We mentioned this story in our last issue and the story was turned out to be not true so it's time for a detailed explanation.

Shortly before the last issue came out we got a press release, that said Bobby Rondinelli was sacked by Blackmore a few days before the American Rainbow-tournee and the tour was delayed for some time. The English musicpaper Sounds (usually very reliable with it's reports) was the first who published Bob's dismissal with the head "Blackmore strikes again".

The report said: "RAINBOW drummer Ron Dinelli has been fired from the band on the eve of a major American tour. Dinelli's stay with the band was short, even by Rainbow's standards, nut he did at least have a chance to visit Britain on the band's last tour here.

There's no news of a replacement drummer, but Cozy Powell is not thought to be amongst the front runners." Our first phonecall to Polydor Holland didn't bring any answer: they knew about nothing. So as it was an official press release I phoned Polydor England.

There answer was: "We know there's something wrong, but we don't know what's going on exactly". But we wanted to know what was going on exactly. So there was only one solution, phone the management in New York. Someone answered and told he was Ritchie Blackmore. He told: "It's true that Bobby has left the band. We're rehearsing new guys at the moment. When we'll find the right one within a week, the Dortmund-gig will take place."

This was two weeks before the Rockpop-festival. So, I was convinced Bob had left Rainbow, especially when Polydor England confirmed the news two days later.

Just after the last issue went out Sounds came with a new story titled "SINCE YOU'VE NOT BEEN GONE", the story about Bob was not true. Ritchie stated: "If he's been fired than we got a very good clone playing with us. We'll have started our tour of the States by the time this story is published.

Frankly I'm sick of all these stories about me firing members and am very curious to find out where these rumours originate, although we have a pretty good idea that they stemmed from an old acquaintance of ours. If that's the case send her my love."

Again I phoned many people, because I didn't know who to believe anymore. Ritchie referred to a woman. The only woman that I could remember who had a part in the Rainbow organization, is the English publicist Jennie Halsall. She's got a press agency in English and did all the pressinfo for Rainbow. That link was obvious now.

A few phonecalls made clear the contract between Halsall and Rainbow was ended a few months ago. Both parties couldn't come to an agreement to continue the contract. Halsall wasn't too happy about that. Not many were aware of this split, including me.

The management of Bruce Payne and Polydor England played their role fine by confirming the report till the moment they were sure it was Jennie Halsall behind this story. But many people were thinking long that Rondinelli indeed had left. Some magazines published the wrong report weeks after which gave again many questions. So it looks like the whole story was an act of revenge to put Blackmore (again) in a bad spotlight.

Well, she succeeded partly, but lucky enough there was nothing going on. The Ritchie Blackmore I got on the phone must have been someone else at the management, who played his role (confirming the report) very well. Blackmore was on that moment with the whole band busy with the American tour and couldn't have been in New York at the same time.

SONG TEXT
A LIGHT IN THE BLACK

Can't forget his face
What a lonely place
Has he really let us go?

All the time that's lost
What's the final cost
Will I really get away?

All my life it seems
Just a crazy dream
Reaching for somebody's star

Can't believe it all
Did he really fall
What to do now I don't know

Something's called me back
There's a light in the black
and I´m ready to go
I'm coming home

Breathed the air before
Hear the thunder roar
Never knew it was for me
Always looking down
Lost and never found
Eyes that look but not to see

All my life it seems
Just a crazy dream
Reaching for somebody's star

Like an open door
That you passed before
But you never had a key

Something's called me back
There's a light in the black

I'm coming home, I'm coming home, yeah
I'm going back to my home

I'm going home, home, home
Going home, home, home
I'm coming back

Don't forget his face
What a lonely place
Did he really let us go

All the time that's lost
What's the final cost
Will I really get away?

All my life it seems
Just a crazy dream
Reaching for somebody's star

Can't believe it all
Did he really fall
What to do now, well I don't know

Something's called me back
Like a light in the black
Yes, I'm ready to go
I'm coming home, home, yeah

I've got my way back home
To the sky
There in the sky
I see your star

WHAT DID (NOT) HAPPENED IN DORTMUND

After the case-Rondinelli was solved, one week before the Rockpop-festival in Dortmund, I started to prepare for this special occasion. Rainbow should fly over from the States especially for this event. Rockpop was of a promotional importance because of the tv recording.

Point 1: Many fans could see the group, before they would tour here in the autumn.
Point 2: This concert could be a right move to sell a lot of extra copies of "Straight between the eyes". So financial very tempting.

But then everything went wrong. I'll try to tell what happened. Many fanclan members bought a ticket with coach trip from Susteren (in the South of Holland) for 56 guilders of Bernd Konings and Martin Meuffels, who organized this. I was in contact with both by phone till Wednesdaynight, ofcourse the case-Rondinelli was at first good for a lot of panic. Then on Thursdaynight 27 May. A fanclan member called me panicky: Rainbow wouldn't show up, because Blackmore was not in the mood!! Bernd Konings told him that.

I didn't know anything about it at that moment so I refused to believe it. But that night the phone kept ringing and over again that same question: is it true that Rainbow won't come over to Dortmund? So time to get in touch with Konings/Meuffels. They confirmed the story.

The promoter of Rockpop had told them that Blackmore DIDN'T FANCY to play and preferred a day off.

I know Ritchie has played some tricks in the past, but cancelling a show because he didn't fancy it, was a bit too much. It would mean he wasn't respecting a contract and that this was going to cost him a lot of money. A very expensive day off. No, Blackmore is not a fool, I was convinced of that. Something must be going on out there.

Ofcourse I was very disappointed, like so many people, but I wanted to find out what was really going on. Anyway, the phone kept ringing that night.

Fridaymorning 28 May. Early in the morning the phone woke me up. Again the same question. So I phoned Polydor Holland. Our usual contacts (Ellen and Michael) were not in the office, but someone else knew something more about it. It was definitive Rainbow wouldn't play and according to the first official statements because of technical problems. The roadies had been for a couple of days in the Westfalenhalle to check things out and somewhere 'something' (yes, it's a bit vague) went wrong.

Ritchie Blackmore told from England he would play this way. Then I phoned the reception of the 'halle'. The lady overthere gave me the message "Rainbow heute nicht dabei sind" (Rainbow won't be playing today). And she told me the replacing program: Joan Jett, Jethro Tull, ZZ Top, Status Quo, Heart and Saxon. SO FOUR OF THE SIX ANNOUNCED GROUPS WOULDN'T PLAY!!!!

To be precise: no Scorpions, no Judas Priest, no Point Blank, no RAINBOW!!! With three friends we decided to go to travel to Dortmund anyway, we had the tickets and maybe it could turn into a nice night after all.

We arrived at half past eight in Dortmund. Joan Jett already had played and Tull was close to the end of their set. We original planned to go with the five of us, but without any trouble we could change the extra ticket for cash at the hall.

Inside we noticed the posters with the replacing line-up. I thought it was a bit weird, why go through these expenses when the place was as good as sold out already? Why did they let print new posters at the last minute. It was a bit implausible. Inside I met many disappointed Rainbow fans as well as several fanclan members.

Many travelled first to the south of Holland, followed by a coach trip which costed them at least 100 guilders. And then no Rainbow. Logical we all were sick and tired.

It wasn't easy to find the promotors. They had hidden themselves in the controlroom of the ZDF (German TV). At least the assistants. Mr. Mama (Mama Concerts, you see) was not available at all for anybody. I didn't got a real answer why Rainbow wasn't playing. There were some loose comments which meant more or less that the hall was different then what was in the contracts. There were problems with the P.A, as well as the position of the tv cameras. According to the contract the tv-cameras shouldn't block the view of the fans. On the backside of the tickets was the text Mit Sichtbehinderung ist zu rechnen (You can expect your view is blocked). That was very clear. And this was the main reason that Rainbow didn't play, the assistants of MAMA Concerts told.

I can be brief about the festival. I hardly watched anything of the other groups. We had a nice time in the bar with the many Rainbow fans and fanclan members with horrible beer-out-of-plastic-glass. I saw some excerpts of ZZ Top (not really exciting), Quo (nothing new) and Saxon. After three songs by Biff and Co. we left and went home. I wasn't satisfied with the result of our investigation. So I phoned around the next few days to find out something more about it all.

The roadies of Rainbow disagreed over the P.A. provided by Mama Concerts and not by Rainbow, because it was not what in the contract was agreed. De P.A. was rejected because it was not able to give the sound that was needed. My reaction: the sound in the Westfalenhalle was indeed terrible, especially when Saxon played. For the people on the stands (most part of the crowd), the tv cameras must have blocked a large part of their view. Despite on the backside of the tickets was printed: Kartenruckgabe ausgeschlossen (tickets can't be withdrawn) it was no problem to get back the 28 D-Mark.

We heard Ritchie Blackmore was responsible for this by putting this condition if the band couldn't play because the agreements weren't satisfying. If Rainbow-fans should turn up and found out in front of the hall that the band wasn't going to play, they must have the possibility to get their ticket-fee back. It's known that Ritchie can't stand it when the fans get a blocked view, and this way he wanted to do something for the fans. Main reason it was called off is the poor organization of MAMA CONCERTS.

We found out that the Scorpions already two months before the show cancelled the show because their "Blackout" album was doing so well in the States that they preferred to tour longer overthere. I don't know the reasons for Judas Priest but apparently Point Blank was never contracted at all. We also can ask if Blackmore not better could have played on this P.A. after all. Well, with Ritchie's ambition to perfect everything he does I can't blame him saying 'no'. Let's hope the European tour at the end of this year will be organized like in the old times by Rainbow's own tour-promoter from Denmark.

JOE LYNN TURNER
FAST EVOLUTION

Traditionally, fun and enjoyment aren't words you associate with Rainbow. Reflecting Blackmore's struggle to find both a compatible line-up and a fulfilling, commercial viable musical style, the atmosphere in and around the band has rarely approached the jocular. Indeed, on certain albums the sound of grinding teeth can almost be heard in the mix.

"There used to be a standing joke that if we were laughing everyone would go 'this is Rainbow, please no fun, be sombre'." Vocalist Joe Lynn Turner moderates his tone as if about to impart information that might nudge the world of its axis. He comes close. "Listen, I don't want to blow anyone's image or anything but (eyes flick to and fro) we're having a f--ckin' great time!"

C'mon, you're not serious. No feuding or fighting? No hint of change?

"Well I'm not saying we couldn't be axed tomorrow and a whole new Rainbow brought in. But everything seems to be going smoothly and I think you can sense it on the new album. There's an honesty there... a passion! We actually like the people we're with and I hate to say it but, yes, we're enjoying ourselves."

yes indeed, four extra pages with news that just arrived... especially because the news in this issue is not that new... because it was written before the holidays... when you read this, rainbow is touring japan... the american tour have been the most successful so far... still there were only some vague news from the states... at the tour, that started early May, the band had various support-acts... like iron maiden (large part of the tour), the rods (their leader rock feinstein was ten years ago with elf also support-act for deep purple) and krokus... like said before, only a few vague reports we got about it... steve gett (kerrang) reviewed one show titled "ritchie, wins by a mile" in washington... after the support-acts the rods and krokus (guitarist von arb demolished his guitar, ritchie shouldn't have liked that), there was rainbow... hitting it off with "spotlight kid", just like last year... steve gett was enthusiastic: the man in black is in brilliant form... plays some of the best lead breaks I've yet to witness him deliver in concert... aside from the omission of the riotous 'death alley driver' and the solo in 'stonecold', he has no complaints... but according to other sources they did play "death alley driver" on some other dates...

in october the last year announced by ronnie dio live-set of black sabbath... title: "evil live" will be released... i hope the quality will be better than the b-sides of the sabbath-singles... already released in the states, not yet overhere, the come-back album of ex-purple glenn hughes, who has been recording quite a while, together with star-guitarist pat thrall (ex-pat travers)... the record was released with as hughes-thrall... the new gillan-single is out in england... title: living for the city, a cover of a stevie wonder-song... out on virgin vs 519... on the b-side there are two songs: "purple sky" (?) and "breaking chains"... both songs won't be on the new album......

ATTENTION MEMBERS OF THE BELGIAN DEEP PURPLE FANCLUB
In their issue 49 of the magazine Diep Peurpel they printed the schedule of tourdates of Rainbow in Germany and Holland. They printed inaccurately that Rainbow will play on 28 November in Holland. This is the wrong date!!!!
