This is a rough'n'ready translation of the magazine which was original in the Dutch language.
Besides this is only a summary as only the most interesting parts are translated.

From the Headoffice
Hello everyone,

Well, here is the first 'Over the rainbow' by the new editorial staff. Last week we released the concert-special "RAINBOW Down to Europe '82" which was planned half December. Because the moving of various things from the old headoffice to our address we had to postpone this issue for some weeks. The name of the magazine is changed slightly, from now on it's 'Over the rainbow', we let down the 'en zo' after many members requested for this. The frontcover is still the design by Henk van Schijndel, de backcover is new. This is designed by Henk Meinsma represent the combination of the last two Rainbow LP's Difficult to cure & Straight between the eyes

Keep on tryin' to catch that fantastic Rainbow

SEEING IS BELIEVING

MOST PEOPLE reckon Ritchie Blackmore's a miserable bastard. Mean, moody, mysterious, macabre and, by implication, Mandraxed to the gills, the Blackmore of popular imagination has a heart as black as his stage clothes and all the humour of a burning orphanage.

In Rock Dream terms Blackmore would have to be painted as the murderous and gloomily glacial funeral director of Rainbow's "Death Alley Driver" video, a Rachmannite rent collector with the conscience of a rabid rodent, or some madly morose monk twiddling thumbscrews in the torture chambers of the Spanish Inquisition. It is, he admits himself, an image he's worked hard to create and perpetuate. But it's actually as close to the real man as Sun reporting is to the facts. Think about it, would the sulky saturnine swine of media mythology really have posed for Sounds sporting stockings and suspenders? Would a bona-fide scowling Puritan really have discussed the serious possibility of changing Rainbow's name to The Filth? Astute readers will have already sussed that, like Dr Who's Tardis, there's more to Blackmore's character than meets the eye. While yours truly had gathered from the revelations of mutual pals Halfin and Makowski that it was probably more realistic to view Blackmore as the biggest wind-up since the noted black revolutionary Tim X invented the wrist watch.

  • This is how an article started, titled "Seeing is believing". It was published in Sounds (December 4th, 1982) by Garry Bushell. It was about some Scandinavian gigs together with an interview with Ritchie Blackmore. If you want to read how the shows went and The Man in Black had to tell, then click here

  • TAPE TALK

    BLACK SABBATH - LONDON
Line-up: RONNIE JAMES DIO, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, Vinnie Appice.
Live at Hammersmith Odeon, London 20.01.81

After the news of the departure of Ronnie James Dio and Vinnie Appice the announced live album "Evil live" is (temporarily) postponed. We have to wait and see if this album ever will be released. So that's why you find now here in 'tape-talk' for once a review of a Sabs tape with ex-Rainbowsinger Ronnie James Dio. This 90 minutes lasting tape is taken from the bootleg 'Hammersmith'.

The concert opens with the introtape Supertzar, which leads into Black Sabbath hitting it off with War Pigs. In the next song, Neon knights, it's notable that Ronnie sings forced now and then, musically this song is very strong.

When Ronnie announced NIB, it's Geezer Butler starting with his thundering bass and the rest follows. Children of the sea is next in a fine version, and then Vinnie Appice can show what he's got with a short but powerful drumsolo in Sweet Leaf.

Lady Evil sounds very close to the studio version and the last song of the first side is the track Black Sabbath which doesn't sound as exciting as it was in the days of the last Sabs-frontman Ozzy Osbourne. On the other side of the tape we get first Heaven and hell, here Ronnie is in fine form and the song, twelve minutes long, is one of the best ones of the set.

Iron man is next, and again Ronnie didn't make it to Ozzy's version. The voice of Mr Dio is not suitable for the simple banging songs for the early Sabs days. Then it's Tony Iommi's turn to show what you can and he takes the time for it, don't expect a Blackmore solo, Tony plays a couple of classic Sabbath riffs which leads into a heavy version of Die Young. It's the last song of the set. Ronnie thanks the audience and we get the first encore, the Sabbath classic Paranoid.

Ronnie does this very well and we didn't expect that. At the end of the song we get a short reprise of Heaven and hell and the cheering crowd gets the band back on stage, this time for a good version of Children of the grave which ends the concert and the tape, which has a very good sound quality the way.

    RAINBOW - LIVERPOOL
Line-up: Ritchie Blackmore, Ronnie James Dio, Cozy Powell, Bob Daisley, David Stone
Live at the Liverpool Empire theatre 4.11.77

This tape, taken from the bootleg "Mark II", starts with Kill the king, followed by Mistreated with a brilliant midpiece. Then Ritchie starts right away playing, while the audience applaud eagerly, Greensleeves that continues with Für Elise before Ronnie introduce 16th Century Greensleeves. We also get a great version of Catch the Rainbow that lasts almost twenty minutes.

Long live rock'n'roll is the next track, it's not out on an album at that moment. We get a total different version than the song is done the last years. It starts with firm playing together by Ritchie, Cozy and David and at the end of the song Ronnie gets the crowd to sing along. Also the backgroundvocals of Bob Daisley sounds well.

Then it's time for the Man on the silver mountain-medley, Ritchie starts with the known Lazy theme before we get the song. It's followed by the Blues, Starstruck and part of the song that was rejected for the Long live rock'n'roll album and never was released on any album: Night People. After that we get a reprise of Man on the silver mountain.

Ronnie introduce then the new members Bob Daisley and David Stone and the last one can start with his keyboards the last song, Still I'm sad. We get ofcourse again all the solos: Blackmore with Beethoven's ninth, the solo of David Stone and Cozy with the 1812th Overture in this 25 minutes lasting song that ends this, with a very good quality, tape of 90 minutes.

    SONG TEXT
    CATCH THE RAINBOW

    When evening falls
    She'll run to me
    Like whispered dreams
    Your eyes can't see
    Soft and warm
    She'll touch my face
    A bed of straw
    Against the lace

    We believed
    We'd catch the rainbow
Ride the wind to the sun
Sail away on ships of wonder
    But life's not a wheel
    With chains made of steel
So bless me come the dawn
    Come the dawn
    Come the dawn

    DAVID COVERDALE

Whitesnake lives again, after a long time of silence and many rumours, last November the new album Saints an' sinners, recorded with the old line-up, came out. The group started touring with a strongly changed line-up with nobody else than Cozy Powell behind the drumkit. Snakeboss David Coverdale broke the silence and did in a short time many interviews. From one of these ("Great white hopes" by Dave Lewis in Sounds 20.11.82) we picked out two questions to Mr Coverdale.

Why is Cozy Powell, a kind of George Best of the drumkit because he played in so many different groups, now in Whitesnake?

DC: Cozy and I negotiate together to work together years ago. In fact, when he left Rainbow he was going to join Whitesnake, but it took that long before he left that group because he wanted to leave with a real big blow. I believe he nearly did that literally in Donington when he blew the cameramen off the stage and only missed Blackmore...... That was a pity, he later remark (with a dirty smile).

As a matter of fact Cozy is the only person I gave three chances because if you once said 'no' to me then you can forget it. But I like Cozy's style and playing, that why he got three chances. I couldn't get rid off Ian Paice just like that, he was doing a good job so I made intuitively a contract with Cozy that one day we would work together. He approached me in January 1982 and asked me to join the Marks and Spencer Group (that's MSG) and told me: "I think you need a new group".

So I answered "You could be right". He came to my house the next day with a full bag of business and we kept talkin' all night but I decided to turn down his offer. My way of writing songs doesn't fit that kind of powertrio and both Chris Glen and Michael Schenker don't sing and Cozy is about the worst singer in the business. Great drummer, but terrible singer! Besides I like keyboard-orientated songs. I was thinking to ask them for Whitesnake, but they had also problems with their management and I didn't feel to get into that too deeply.

Then I suggested Cozy to leave MSG because I thought the future wasn't lookin' that good for Michael and I think I was damn right. I think the Snake fans will be very happy with Cozy. He's an animal to work with, sometimes when he's hitting his drums really well I feel an ache going straight through my back.

Now Cozy definitive joined Whitesnake, will his past -the link with Rainbow- blaze up the battle between you and Blackmore?

DC: There's no battle between us, he recently send me his best regards. In Japan there even was a rumour that he was going to join Whitesnake. There were two possibilities, but Slim had just left town.

I don't want him in Whitesnake, but a lot of people have the wrong opinion about the two of us. I'm disappointed in Ritchie Blackmore because he's such a great guitarplayer -and I don't wanna bring him down- but he let me down over and over again. He's not recording his live solos, it always sound as a weekday job and so disappointing. His latest work sounds like rejected Foreigner material but good luck to him, I wish him well".

Note: David Coverdale is on the first face not too bitter about Ritchie Blackmore anymore, but if you read between the lines David still means the same, only before he said it straight from the shoulder. He now picks his words a little bit better. This is proved by the answer he told the German magazine Bravo (9.12.82) on the question while he was now in Germany for the TV program 'Na sowas' he also was going to visit a Rainbow gig on the tour that was going on that moment. "Before I go to see them, I rather walk naked in my bare arse through the snow, our music is much better than theirs anyway" thus a Coverdale like we all know him.

  • RECORD TALK

    * WHITESNAKE "SAINTS AN' SINNERS": Logical follow-up of Come an' get it, recorded with the old line-up.

    * FANDANGO "JOE LYNN TURNER": Compilation album with vocals by the current Rainbow singer Joe Lynn Turner, real American polished rock.

    * BLACK SABBATH "LIVE EVIL": The postponed double album of the Sabs got released after all. Pure heavy rock with ex-Rainbow singer Ronnie James Dio.

    HOT SHOTS

    * Ex-Rainbow bassist Jimmy Bain toured with the Phil Lynott Band in Oct/Nov '82 in Europe, there was on 31 October also a concert in Paradiso, Amsterdam. Jimmy didn't play bass, but keyboards!

    * There are rumours that a new group with that same Jimmy Bain is getting put up, that group has no one else than ex-Rainbow singer Ronnie James Dio who got the sack in Black Sabbath. He took also drummer Vinnie Appice with him who got the same treatment. The guitarplayer is Vivian Cambell, who played before in Sweet Savage. For the time being the group is named after the singer, DIO and it seems the group already has got a recorddeal.

    * Don Airey left the group of Madman Ozzy Osbourne, he now in the group of Gary Moore that also include ex-Whitesnakes Ian Paice and Neil Murray. The group played on Rockpopfestival which will be aired 25 January on German TV.

    * Again there are strong rumours in England that there will be a Deep Purple reunion. Ritchie Blackmore told several times statements last November during the tour that this year something could be expected (like in the "the eyes have it" article). There are no official statements so far though.

    VIDEO

Except for bootlegs there are also questions about video tapes of Rainbow. Here's a survey of what's around as far as we know now.

    RAINBOW AT ROCKPALAST

Kill the king, Mistreated, 16th Century greensleeves, Long live rock'n'roll, Man on the silver mountain, Lazy, Blues, Starstruck, Night people, Still I'm sad, Do you close your eyes.

The whole concert was filmed, only half an hour was shown as TV broadcast.

    INTERVIEW COUNTDOWN

Recorded in 1980 in Rotterdam, interview with Ritchie and Roger plus some excepts from the All night long promotional video.

    PROMOTIONAL VIDEOS

Rainbow recorded a couple video clips for promoting their singles. The following ones are known:

    Long live rock'n'roll
    L.A. Connection
    Since you've been gone
    All night long
    I surrender
    Can't happen here
    Stonecold
    Death alley driver

All videos show the band on stage, without an audience. 'All night long' has two different versions, one with a dancing girl, the other with live footage.

On Stonecold there are shots of Joe Lynn Turner between mirrors but the most interest video is without a doubt 'Death alley driver' in which Ritchie appear as 'the death'. The band is not only shot on stage but also on a graveyard.

In the States MTV recorded a concert in San Antonio (Texas), in the States this video is for sale as an official release which should be released later this year also in Europe.

There are also rumours that there's a video aired by the American program 'Rock-concert', lasting about 15 minutes from 1975 or 1976.

To end there are the so-called 'private-videorecordings', recorded during concerts with a camera in the audience, most of the time not too good quality. Most known in this category is the tape from Essen 1981 of the former Official English Rainbow Fanclub.

    THE EYES HAVE IT

"TRUST YOU to come to the two worst shows... got any money??"

With guts around my ankles, suffering the aftermath and excesses of a tropical jaunt over to the mosquito coast, accompanied by a bad case of the runs that would make the London Marathon look like a casual stroll (bicycle clips at the ready!) - yours faithfully wasn't exactly in prime-time mood for the maninblack's drier than Sainsbury's White Vermouth humour, scathing enough to make Basil Fawlty look positively charitable.

"Is that a suntan or hepatitis, heh...heh". The looming dark figure of a guitar hero points a solitary, spindly finger at your frail one's slightly signed, sallow complexion bearing more than a passing resemblance to partially burnt toast. Some devilish chuckling from the 'evil one' echoes around the dressing room accompanied by the familiar noise of the seal breaking on the obligatory Johnny Walker Black Label bottle. The location is Hamburg and the occasion Rainbow's current and most successful, incidentally) European tour.

  • Read the complete article "The eyes have it" by Toots Daley, published in Kerrang no 31 (16-29 December 1982). The story is about two concerts in Germany: Hamburg and Berlin which took place on 8th and 9th November 1982. To read it all click here

  • TAPE TALK EXTRA

Just before this issue got out we got a new audiotape of Rainbow's US Tour 1982. The gig was played in the Wings Stadium in Kalamazoo, Michigan on 15 May 1982. After the introtape the band starts with Death Alley Driver, followed by Miss Mistreated and I surrender. Joey thanks the audience and announces a song from the last album (?) Difficult to cure. We hear in this song, Can't happen here, the female backgroundvocals by Dee & Lynn very well.

After Tearin' out my heart we get MAN ON THE SILVER MOUNTAIN, the second song that later was crossed out the normal set. Then David Rosenthal get us with a short keyboards improvisation to the next -also not in Europe played- track, a great rockin' version of ROCK FEVER in which we get a good solo by Ritchie. Via the Lazy theme we get to Stonecold -it's only done half- and then Power. It's Ritchie's time for a solo that goes over into the instrumental Difficult to cure.

David and Bobby show there talents on keyboards and drums after which the set is ended with Long Live rock'n'roll. Ritchie Blackmore start the encores with a short, heavy solo before we get Smoke on the water. The song from the Purple days is the only encore and at the end we get Vielleicht das nachster Zeit played from tape. This tape has an excellent quality that lasts 75 minutes.
