From the Headoffice
Hello Rainbowfanatics

The new look of "Over the rainbow" only has resulted in positive reactions! Thank you all! That means we'll continue this way. On this moment there's not much news about Rainbow. The band did a short Japanese Tour in March. After that, according to tourmanager Colin Hart, the rehearsals for a new album should start.

It looks like "Over the rainbow" will be soon available in the English language as well. The Official UK Rainbow Fanclub approached us to check if they could release our fanzines in England. They were quite impressed with the Dutch version of "Over the Rainbow", even though they didn't have a clue what most of the text meant. This Fanclub works close together with the Rainbow management so this could turn out interesting for us too ofcourse. We might be able to offer you the official "Bent out of shape" tourmerchandising soon.

RAINBOW ROCKS JAPAN

In March Rainbow played, as far as we know, their last live concerts. They did a very short Japanese Tour, only three concerts in the largest halls of Japan, in the Osaka Castle Hall (11 March) and in the Budokan Hall in Tokyo (13 en 14 March). From the first and the last show here's a review.

The concert of Rainbow was in the Castle Hall. This hall is the largest in Japan. The number of seats is three times as many as the Festival Hall,Alcatrazz played in January. The hall was packed with young kids, that shows obviously how popular Rainbow is on the moment. The last moths they didn't play live, that also was the reason for their very long soundcheck. As soon as the lights went out in the hall there was an enormous cheering from the crowd and the members of Rainbow came on the stage. Just like their last visit to Japan they started with "Spotlight kid".

One of the encores was "Smoke on the water", very good sung by Joe Lynn Turner. The last time Rainbow toured in Japan Turner was in a bad shape and he was a bit disappointing. Now there were rumours he was going to leave the band after the Japanese concerts. Dave's solo was again long, but not boring. Then over to Chuck, the new drummer, I think his drumwork was very tight and much better than Bobby (I'm sorry, Bob!!). About Ritchie's guitarplay; what can we say more about him. He never disappoints us. Everyone was impressed, even though he didn't smashed his guitar we were very satisfied with this concert.

In Osaka they did about the same set as in England and Scandinavia ("Stargazer" already was dropped in some of the Scandinavian shows) in 1983. The show in Budokan had some surprises.

Rainbow was the subject of the day in Japan's most popular paper, Asahi Newspaper.

The text said: Rainbow, the kings of hardrock, will play Japan after they were absent for almost two years. Their last concerts were top class, a real show with very loud popmusic. One of the last fashions is to play live together with an orchestra.

The orchestra with Rainbow will exist of 25 players. I'm very curious how this show will be. Rock and classical music will meet each other, will this show us a new world? Another promising act is the new Japanese Heavy Metal act Action. They will be the support-act. Their debut will be released on 21 March (source: Asahi Newspaper).

On 14 March there were 3 cameras set up just in front of the stage for recording the concert for a video release. The Japanese group Action was the support-act. During their performance not everyone could have patience to wait for Rainbow. There were many people who started to shout for Rainbow. At 19.00 hours the lights in the hall went out the second time. Everyone started to shout "RITCHIE, RITCHIE!!!".

Yeah, the party started. The big eyes looked fierce to the audience. They made big spots during "I surrender". I was very impressed by the fabulous "Catch the Rainbow". I loved it!! The highlight was "Beethoven's ninth" with the orchestra. It was superb! I was under the (wrong) impression that I was in the most sacred place. The orchestra became visible behind the drumkit under rainbow-colored spotlight.

The show took about two full hours and I have to admit: "Rainbow is the king of hardrock!" To end here's the tracklist: "Over the rainbow introtape", "Desperate heart (although I'm not sure of this one)", "Miss Mistreated", "I surrender", "Spotlight kid", "Catch the rainbow", "Power", "Keyboards solo", "Street of dreams", "Fool for the night"; "Guitarsolo", "Beethoven's Ninth (with Orchestra)", "Guitarsolo", "Drumsolo", "Blues", "Stranded", "Death alley driver". Encores: "Firedance", "All night long", "Woman from Tokyo", "Since you been gone", "Smoke on the water", "Over the rainbow-outrotape".

DON'T TAKE ME FOR A LOSER

On 21 March Gary Moore and his band played Nijmegen. During this concert we could finally see the very first Rainbowbassplayer, Craig Gruber, live in action. The current line-up includes except for Moore and Gruber also ex-Purple basher Ian Paice and guitarist/keyboardplayer Neil Carter. it definitely was a good concert, the band had to do three encores (Moore told they hardly had do that ever) to satisfy the audience.

It was mainly pumprock they played with Gary Moore in the leading role. I preferred to see a bit more alternation, his studio albums have enough good material for a better choice of repertoire. But instead of some more songs Gary Moore did long solos in every song (who said something about Blackmore the ego?) while there wasn't much alternation.

Craig Gruber was the disappointment of the night. He was standing awkwardly, and uncomfortable lookin' to the crowd. Also his short basssolo in "Empty Rooms" gave a forced impression.

So very understandable Blackmore couldn't use such a person on stage and fired him after the first Rainbow album. Paicey maybe looks like an old man, he still hits his drumkit like a madman. Neil Carter is a good showman, who learned the ropes in UFO. Still it looks sometimes a bit overdone.

I missed the contribution of Don Airey. In the long instrumental "Blinder" we heard a lot of Blackmore-like riffs, fragments of "Kill the king" and "A light in the black" were obvious to be heard.

The best songs I think were "Shapes of things" and "Empty Rooms", although they sound better on vinyl. Also the by now compelled "Tulips from Amsterdam" was another of Gary Moore's successful tricks. So we got a very good concert, that maybe in the end got a bit tedious.

RAINBOW IN THE DARK

The rumours about a Deep Purple reunion flare up again, Gillan is no longer in Black Sabbath? That must be something behind it. So let's pick up where we left last time. That's in "Over the rainbow 16". Jon Lord got over to the Continent during Rainbow's European "Straight between the eyes" Tour to have a chat with Ritchie en Roger. That was in November 1982.

After that Ian Gillan left in January (1983) to the States, where both the Rainbowmembers live, and it looked like it all was going to happen. There were five try-outshows planned in South America, but Blackmore gave them the elbow in the last minute. Gillan understood the failure and choose for the offer of Black Sabbath above the insecure tempers of Ritchie Blackmore. In an interview on the radio (BFBS) Gillan told that it was Ritchie who was to blame for the failure. Gillan told that was the last chance. But never say never.......

Ritchie and Roger had in May (1983) during their stay in Copenhagen (they were recording "Bent out of shape" then) a purple conversation with Ian Paice in a discotheque. Rainbow did an UK, Scandinavian, (very short) US and Japan Tour and there were many changes in the tourschedules. Gillan left himself Black Sabbath in the mean time. And so the rumours flare up again. The full Purple Mk II line-up was spotted on a party. Blackmore, Glover and Gillan appear to have written together some new songs. In the press there were already revealing reports that "Rainbow was put on ice". Maybe money (still) can realize miracles.......

HOT SHOTS

  • The new TONY CAREY solo album is not called "Hungry" but "Some Tough City". The working title of the LP was indeed "Hungry" (and it's the title of one of the songs on the album), but the title got changed in the last minute to "Some tough City". It's real US FM rock.

  • TONY CAREY is doing well with this album. The from this album taken single, "Fine, fine day" made it to the US Top 100 charts. There are plans to go on tour to promote the album.

  • In the States it seems "BENT OUT OF SHAPE" is also a slang expression for having drunk too much.

  • The second DIO album has the working title "Last in line" and is gettin' recorded in the Caribou Ranch in Denver. Besides various festivals (June and July) the band will start a long British Tour in September.

  • JOE LYNN TURNER did in the past a commercial for a beer brand on American radio.

  • The present-day solo of COZY POWELL in the Whitesnake live-show exists of the wellknown "1812th Overture" for the rest out of a part from Holst's "The Planets" titled "Mars, the bringer of war".

  • CHUCK BURGI's predecessor who only was for a few weeks rehearsing with Rainbow, one Chris (last name unknown), seems to be to come from a group from Long Island, which is managed by Ian Broad.

  • IAN BROAD was in the past Ritchie's personal assistant (these days that is Barry Ambrosio). Ian was fired, after being Ritchie's right hand for years, after he drove with a Mercedes in a hotel and ask at the desk in which room Mr Blackmore was.

  • CHUCK BURGI is also playing drums on the debut-album of Bon Jovi. This is the group from a guy named John Bongiovi, who also lives, like Chuck, in New Jersey. The music is typical good US hardrock. It's not clear on which tracks Chuck plays. The music is comparable with other projects Chuck recently played drums on like Aldo Nova (here also present), Michael Bolton and Balance. So recommend.

  • Although RAINBOW has recorded a large number of concerts through the years, there's not a live-album to be expected.

  • "Will you love me tomorrow" was one of the encores with Graham Bonnet live. The song was once planned as a live-single, never got released though. RONNIE JAMES DIO also recorded this song in the past. That was in 1962 as a solo-single.

  • The largest part of the Rainbow Rising line-up will play in July on a Heavy Metal Festival in Japan. RONNIE JAMES DIO & JIMMY BAIN with DIO and COZY POWELL with Whitesnake are on the bill.

  • GRAHAM BONNET (Alcatrazz) and DON AIREY (Ozzy Osbourne) will also play Japan in July.

  • RAINBOW recorded in the States also a video for the track "Can't let you go". Ritchie by the way hates to record videoclips.

    SONG TEXT
    LOST*IN*HOLLYWOOD

    Gotta get a message through
Cause I think I'm losing you
    Am I too late
    Drinking habit's a loose sometime
I gotta know if you're still mine
    And I can't wait
Last time I saw your face
You tried to hide the tears
But I could see the trace
I'd be there if I could
But it's so far away from home

In the dark the vultures wait
    I can hear them
    Knocking at my gate
    But I'm not here
    The brew was cold
    The meat is stale
In the L.A. night the sirens wail
    The song you can feel
    Pale stars that never shine
    Scotch and the whiskey
    And the Rainbow local wine
She's done more bad than good
    I gotta get away somehow
    Lost in Hollywood

On the streets the sun is fine
Don't you feel the advantage hit your mind
    Feels all right oh yeah
    But I'm a lover
    Like a loaded gun
    Chasing shadows on the run
    Out in the night
    I'm gonna lose control
    If I been losing you
    To pay for rock'n'roll
Get back I know I should
Gotta get back home to you
You don't know what I been through
But there's nothing I can do
    Lost in Hollywood

    BOOTLEG CORNER

First some more info about the bootlegs that were mentioned in "Over the rainbow no 21". "The cure for herpes" is the soundtrack of the official San Antonio (Texas 18 August 1982) video. The cover is the backcover of the "Stonecold" single. "Brainstorm" was recorded on 6 November 1982 in Stockholm. Nothing special, just the average concert.

    Rogers Birthday Party

This bootleg just came out and is titled "Rogers Birthday Party". This concert was recorded on Roger's birthday (30 November), in the Calderone Theatre in Long Island in 1979. The cover (a bit new wave style but with a professional look) shows part of a face. The quality of the sound is excellent stereo. All instruments are clearly distinguishable.

When you listen to this double album you hear right away the atmosphere is very good. Before the show most likely the alcohol flew very well. The repertoire they play is the usual "Down to earth" liveset. Bonnet stand out in "Eyes of the world" and "Love's no friend (classy version) through his laughin' and talkin' in the middle of the lyrics. In between "Since you been gone and All night long" we get the instrumentals "Fur Elise" and "Over the rainbow". In "All night long" Graham tells it's Roger's birthday, his 21st (a nice illusion). Graham and Don then give Roger, with a "Happy Birthday to Roger", without doubt a rosy face (we know that Gloverboy). Graham recommend Roger's work once more during "Lost in Hollywood". In this song Ritchie (yes, he is also present) does a great solo. The usual solos are loud'n'clear on this bootleg.

In the encore, a long medley, Bonnet has serious problems to follow it all. Judy Garland finish this show as usual. This is a classy bootleg. The sphere is for Rainbow standards unprecedented (it's partytime), the songs are played very well and the sound quality is excellent. This is one of the best concerts I ever heard of Rainbow. So this bootleg is definitely worth the effort!

New bootlegs expected soon are "Nippon Connections" (more information unknown) and "Stargazer" (Live 1983 Tour plus live-versions of "Jealous Lover" and "No Release").
